In "Effi Briest," plants and water are recurring motifs that symbolize the natural world and the passage of time. The presence of plants, such as roses and ivy, often represents the fleeting beauty and fragility of life, as well as the entrapment of the characters within societal expectations. Water, on the other hand, is a symbol of change and transformation, as well as a reflection of Effi's emotional state. Both motifs serve to underscore the themes of nature, time, and the constraints of society in the novel. **

One quote from "Effi Briest" by Theodor Fontane is: "The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers and cities; but to know someone who thinks and feels with us, and who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden." This quote reflects the theme of loneliness and the importance of human connection in the novel. It highlights the idea that true fulfillment comes from emotional intimacy and understanding between individuals. **

In the novel "Effi Briest" by Theodor Fontane, Kessin is the town where Effi Briest lives with her husband, Baron Geert von Innstetten. Kessin is a small, quiet town on the Baltic Sea coast, and it is where Effi's loneliness and boredom begin to take a toll on her. Effi feels isolated and disconnected from her husband, who is often away on business, and she begins to feel trapped in her marriage and the confines of small-town life. Kessin becomes a symbol of Effi's stifling and unfulfilling existence, and it is in this setting that the tragic events of the novel unfold. **

Geert von Innstetten married Effi Briest because he was attracted to her beauty and charm. Additionally, marrying Effi was seen as a socially advantageous match due to her family's status and connections. Despite their age difference, von Innstetten believed that Effi would make a suitable and respectable wife. **

The novel portrays the everyday life and social norms of 19th-century Prussia with a focus on the psychological development of its characters. Effi's inner thoughts and emotions are explored in a poetic and introspective manner, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. The novel also addresses themes of societal expectations, morality, and the consequences of repressed desires, all of which are characteristic of poetic realism. **

Effi Briest can be classified as Naturalism to some extent due to its focus on portraying the harsh realities of society and human nature. The novel explores themes such as social constraints, the impact of societal norms on individuals, and the consequences of repressed desires. Effi's tragic fate can be seen as a result of the deterministic forces at play in a society that values appearances and conformity over individual happiness. However, Effi Briest also contains elements of Realism, as it presents a detailed and objective depiction of middle-class life in 19th-century Germany. **
